What happens in knee osteoarthritis (OA)

Knee OA is the result of mechanical, cellular, and biochemical processes.

Healthy cartilage, which is composed of water, collagen, and proteoglycans, continually remodels itself as chondrocytes replace macromolecules lost through degradation. OA disrupts this process, leading to increased degeneration and an abnormal repair response. (22) The mechanical, cellular, and biochemical interactions associated with OA may cause inflammation, stiffness and reduced mobility, synovial changes, and progressive degeneration.
